1. 反义疑问句 (Tag Questions)
说话人在句子末尾加 "..., doesn't it?" / "..., right?" / "..., isn't it?" 来引导对方同意。Luke 在这段中多次使用。
""It's a cognitive process, right?""
""This might seem like stating the obvious, but it is a simple thing.""
注意:当语调下降 ⬇️ 时,表示说话人期待同意;语调上升 ⬆️ 时,则是真正的提问。
2. 同位语 / 解释性插入语 (Apposition)
说话人用逗号隔开,解释前面的词。口语中非常常见,帮助补充信息。
""Also, executive function, which is how we describe the mental processing involved in problem solving.""
""Working memory, which is also known as short-term memory.""
这种结构在学术英语中很常见,用来给前面的术语下定义。
3. 动名词作主语 (Gerund as Subject)
动词 + -ing 形式作主语时,当作单数名词使用。
""Forming good daily habits is important." (forming = 主语)"
""This might seem like stating the obvious." (stating = 介词宾语)"
4. "compound" 作动词表示"加剧"
compound 通常作形容词/名词表示"复合的/化合物",但作动词时表示"使问题更严重"。
""The mental load is compounded. Meaning that more and more is added on top of itself.""
""Topping up with more coffee during the day just compounds the problem.""
五、听力难点提示
1. 学术缩写 et al.
Luke 一开始把 et al 读成了 "at all",后来自己纠正了。这是学术英语中常见的缩写。
- et al. = et alii (拉丁语) = "and others"
- 用法:Ganio et al., 2011 = Ganio 和其他研究者, 2011年
- 注意:Luke 的自我纠正 "It's not pronounced at all... it's pronounced et al" 是很好的听力练习素材
2. 连读与吞音
| 写法 | 实际听起来 |
| kind of | "kinda" |
| sort of | "sorta" |
| want to | "wanna" |
| going to | "gonna" |
| can't deal with | "can't-deal-with" (快速连读) |
| for goodness sake | "for-goodness-sake" |
原文: "the body can't deal with caffeine very well" — 听起来像 "can't-deal-with" 快速连在一起。
3. 填充词 (Fillers)
Luke 在讲解科学内容时用了大量填充词来争取思考时间:
- um, uh — "Um, when you wake up, your body is crying out for water."
- I mean — "I mean, I wonder what other percentages can do."
- right? — "It's a cognitive process, right?"
- let's say — "Emotional intelligence, let's say."
- you know — "You know, the kind of title of content..."
4. 自我纠正 (Self-correction)
Luke 经常说错后立刻纠正自己,这是 native speaker 的自然习惯:
""It's not pronounced at all. Not at all. No, it's pronounced et al.""
""I said half an hour. I'm just kind of joking. It's often hours later.""
5. 幽默与夸张 (Humor & Exaggeration)
Luke 用夸张的方式来解释概念,注意他的语气变化:
""If you're 100% dehydrated, you are basically a sort of husk. You're just a fossil, a fossilized human.""
""They're basically homeless snails, the poor things." (关于 slugs)"
""This episode is sponsored by H2O. It's not.""
